Remote Learning

Information for Parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home. For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page. In addition, the school has a Remote Education Policy.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

    The remote curriculum

  • What is taught to pupils at home?

    A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.

  • What should my child expect from immediate remote education on the first day or two of pupils being sent home?
    • Links to sites and resources you can access immediately.
    • Check in that you have devices to access learning.
    • Learning uploaded to Google Classroom for your child to access.
  • Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

    Yes, they will have access to the same/similar learning activities including slideshows and/or audio feeds as appropriate.

    Remote teaching and study time each day

  • How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?
    We expect that remote education (including remote teaching and independent work) will take pupils broadly the following number of hours each day:
    • KS1/2: 3 hours a day on average
    • KS3/4: 4 hours a day on average

    Accessing remote education

  • How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

    Through Google Classroom (see link at bottom of this page)

  • If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
    We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. Learning can be accessed through tablets, larger mobile phones, laptops, PCs, Xboxes and Playstations. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:
    • Loaning devices
    • Loaning dongles
    • Supporting through paper based learning
    • Following up with phone support
  • How will my child be taught remotely?
    We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:
    • Google Classroom: Pre-recorded sessions, voice notes, slideshows, some group or individual activities
    • Live sessions
    • Links to other sites and resources that may be of interest and further support learning and engagement
  • How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?
    We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:
    • Class teams will call home at three different times during the day as stated on the remote learning policy
    • Home visits will be offered and deployed based on need to provide more learning packs or welfare support
    • Members of SLT will make phone calls home
    • External services support aligned with school needs and directives from senior staff

    Engagement and feedback

  • What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
    • To encourage your child to access the learning
    • To feedback any issues
    • To utilise the school staff phone calls home to support the home learning offer being provided. These calls will happen at three different times during the day as stated on the remote learning policy
  • How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
    • Monitoring Google Classroom and the completion of learning
    • Provide feedback to your child
    • Phone calls/email/text to check in and follow up non-engagement
  • How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
    Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work is as follows:
    • Mini quizzes
    • Whole class feedback on Google Classroom
    • Written responses online or verbal feedback via phone calls
    • Assignment grading (via Google Classroom)
    • Additional support for pupils with particular needs

    Remote education for self-isolating pupils

    Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.
    • If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

      Your child’s work will be in line with all remote learning and in case of a lockdown will be equal to that for pupils onsite (see remote learning policy for more details).

Further Resources

There are many websites providing a wealth of resources for online home learning including the government website and BBC Bitesize. While it is valuable to have so many resources available, seeing so many can be daunting. They are there so you can select ideas and support for learning you are doing at home, and can be fitted in between equally important fresh air, exercise and downtime.  The teachers will, at times, direct you to certain ones.
 
Home School Agreement
 
We value the link between home and school and foster this by issuing a Home School Agreement to every child.  Each year, all stakeholders are expected to read this through to remind themselves of this agreement.
